TITLE: Unveiling: Three Women Explore Identity
BRIEF ABOUT: In the Inez Greenberg Gallery, works by artists Jessica Matson-Fluto, Leila Rastegar and Sherry Lee Short are featured which explore personal and cultural history in a variety of two-dimensional media.
Small-scale paintings by Matson-Fluto present human forms suspended in abstract layers of paint. “I choose to create these dream-like scenarios as a method of self-discovery and also desensitization to memories of a haunting life-altering event,” states Matson-Fluto. Of her current work, Leila Rastegar says, “In the blue series, the women are surrounded by ornament yet isolated from it; they themselves are not colorful or adorning ornament. The clothing they wear does not reflect their individuality.” Sherry Lee Short’s ongoing series of self-portraits both mimic and challenge classical representations of women by men in art. She states, “These portraits are the beginning of my dialogue with patriarchal culture’s expectations of me as an aging or ‘older’ woman.”
