(NWPR-IN) – Works in the exhibit entitled, “Sleepers” by Brooklyn, New York fiber artist Joetta Maue (www.joettamaue.com) is on view in the Hugh N. Ronald Gallery at Arts Place in Portland, Indiana through October 6, 2012.
As a full time artist, curator and arts writer, Maue’s recent body of work is a series of embroideries and images exploring the conflicts and contradictions that exist within intimacy. Her work resides within the realm of the everyday, everyday objects, autobiography and the female. She is especially interested in the role of personal relationships in our lives, seen in our most intimate moments and spaces.
“My recent work has been continuously drawn back to and inspired by the place of the bed. The bed is a powerful locale in our daily life, with most of us beginning and ending our day here. We experience our most intimate moments of vulnerability, love, passion, sadness and weakness here. Most of us begin and end our life in this place that is piled with soft sheets and pillows. As a metaphor we can experience all the most significant emotions of human life in this one simple place of our daily life. My current image based work explores the liminal space of the sleeping figure simultaneously angelic and crucified in shape, peaceful and deathlike in character. My text-based works explores the complicated emotions that reside within intimacy and identity,” explains artist Maue.
The role of craft practices such as embroidery and knitting are essential to her work because of their slow meditative labor and their role in the history of the woman’s voice. All of the linens used in her work are re-appropriated handmade linens creating collaboration between her and women of the past.

With a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Ohio State University and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Massachusetts, Joetta Maue’s work has been shown throughout galleries and museums across the country. Most recently solo shows and the Textile Arts Center in Brooklyn, New York and Oasis Gallery in Maquette, Michigan. She will also have selected works in the Self- Fabricated exhibit at The Art Complex Museum in Duxbury, Massachusetts.
In addition, she authors the popular textile arts blog, “Little Yellowbird” as well as being a regular contributor to the online journal, “Mr. X Stitch & the Textile Arts Center” blog. Joetta is also a freelance curator who has reviewed five recent New York City exhibits focusing on contemporary fiber works. She has been featured in the books, “Indie Craft” and “PUSH Stitchery and Needle” magazine, “Fiber Arts Now Magazine” and the “Surface Design Association” magazine.
