New York artist Jim Klausen is the most organic of photographers. Through his perspective and technique, he transforms scenes of nature into a world of their own. He takes flora and fillets it. So that you see is the chorus of minerals and byproducts that pulse through their xylem and phloem.
The artist says, “Nature is filled with subtle colors, symmetry, rhythm, chaos, as well as tactile and visual texture. By enhancing the colors in my photographs of tree bark and carefully cropping these images, I have created natural abstractions. I hope you will be surprised by their beauty and your appreciation of the exquisiteness of nature will expand.”
Klausen interrupts bark, branches and leaves that we would normally just walk by. (Why wait to smell the roses when the beauty is all around us. Now it is up to us to preserve it and treasure it as a member of our family. After all from earth we come and we shall return.) We are a part of this ecology. I am confident viewers will discover Klausen’s artistry will make them appreciate it more and inspire them to bring some of his artistry into their homes. His art opens a new window to the world in our hermetic environments.
I have found that Klausen does not enhance; moreover reveals a harmonious unity and delight with each image. There seems to a mix of John Coltrane mixed with a bit of Mozart to bring of a jazz fugue to light and color. (Wish my botany books and graphics had been this exciting. I would be living in the jungles of Bali.)
The opening is on Sunday, January 6, 2013 at the Ojai Art Center in California. You are invited to see this new look at nature and meet the artist from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. The exhibition will run through January 30, 2013.
