On exhibit, “Leaves: Raw Edge Applique Art Quilts” by Tonna Zieske in the Bruce H. Lien Cultural Cafe at the Dahl Arts Center in Rapid City, South Dakota through February 22, 2018, her quilts are meticulously crafted, at times appearing to almost be a photograph.
“Art has always been a passion. When I was seven I got one of the best presents ever: a box of 64 crayons. Oh, the thrill of all those colors! Grades one to twelve are memorable because of art classes and the teachers who gave me encouragement. After that, my art education was adult education classes in oil painting and watercolors long ago. I’ve always worked for newspapers or printing companies, many of those years as a graphic artist. Now that I am retired I have time to pursue the art I enjoy,” said Quilter Zieske.
For many years, Tonna has been making quilts; however it has only been one year for her working on raw edge applique quilts with the subject matter focusing on landscapes.
Creating art quilts has been on a rapid rise and Zieske’s preferred medium is Batik fabric, but regardless she says, “…it creates interesting limitation.”
