Happy Birthday to a city treasure

LIMA, OH (NWPR) – On Thursday, November 17, 2022, a celebration of its 95th anniversary of the opening of the Ohio Theatre Lima starts at 6:00 pm.

Timothy Cheeseman directs the Learning Center and Writing Lab at the Ohio State University, Lima.

Scheduled speakers Lima Mayor Sharetta Smith, President/CEO of Lima/Allen County Chamber of Commerce, Jed Metzger, Director of the Allen County Museum, Amy Craft Klassen, Chairman of The Council for the Arts of Greater Lima, Bart Mills, Executive Director of Downtown Lima Inc, Betsy Billingsley and current stewards of the Ohio Theatre Lima, Michael Bouson and Joe Correll, who will share the historical, cultural, social and artistic impact the theatre has on the city since its birth in 1927 to the present.

Other activities include music by Ray Cheney on the piano as well as a special salute for the Ohio Theatre Lima; Stage Door Canteen’s Almost Famous Open Mic Night from 8:00-10:00 pm featuring Timothy Cheeseman, Lima’s First Poet Laureate (www.timothycheeseman.com). The theatre is also making available a food and drink menu.

Located at 122 West North Street, the Ohio Theatre Lima is on the National Register of Historic Places. It opened in 1927 as a movie palace and vaudeville theatre before being converted into a nightclub in 1978. Currently, one-third of the Theatre has been fully renovated and the remainder is in a major renovation to return the theatre to as it appeared in the roaring 20’s.
