(NWPR-OH) – On Thursday, January 20 at 6:30 pm in the NCR Renaissance Auditorium of the Dayton Art Institute, the Principal String Quartet with violins of Jessica Hung and Kirstin Greenlaw, viola of Sheridan Currie and the cello of Andra Padrichelli, along with Joshua Nemith on the keyboard and the flute of Rebecca Tryon Andres, the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra sets in motion Johann Sebastian Bach’s “A Musical Offering.” Also on Friday, January 2, DPO Music Director Neal Gittleman will show how Bach turned this royal theme into one of his most successful works at 8:00 pm in the Schuster Center.
The performance is a collection of canons, fugues and other pieces of music by Bach related to a single theme given to him by Frederick the Great in May of 1747. Two months later, Bach published the work of music and dedicated it to the king. Bach inscribed the work with the words Regis Iussu Cantio Et Reliqua Canonica Arte Resoluta (loosely translated as “the theme given by the king, with additions, resolved in the canonic style”), the first letters of which spell out the word ricercar, a well-known musical genre of the time. Two ricercars, one in three parts, the other in six, are included within the complete work.
