Slated to open on the stage Friday, November 5,
“Mrs. Warren’s Profession” written in 1893 by George Bernard Shaw, it was highly noted controversial in its time. Auditions for this comedy are being held by appointment by contacting its NWA’s director, Brittany Gardner-Kennel at fayelou2@yahoo.com or call 574.612.3677.
The play, after being published in 1898, it was immediately banned from public performance. The cast, crew and stage manager were all arrested after opening night of a private performance and charged with “offending public decency”. The rest of the performances were canceled.
It’s also fun to note that before the show opened, tickets were being sold for nearly $60.00 on the black market. Shaw’s brutal interpretation of the social injustice concerning the status of women was not well received. It wasn’t
until 1925 that the play was permitted to publicly perform. It ran successfully for 68 performances. Today, the play is highly respected and has been arguably considered Shaw’s best work, for its harsh jabs at social classes and etiquette is still very much appreciated in modern society.
