UPDATE: With a unanimous final vote today (Tuesday, May 3), the University of Kentucky Board of Trustees selected University of Alabama Birmingham Provost Eli Capilouto to be UK’s 12th president. He will begin July 1.
Terms of Compensation: The University of Kentucky and Dr. Eli Capilouto have an agreement in principle on terms of compensation: Five-year contract of a base salary: $500,000; Maximum bonus: $50,000 (eligible to receive up to this amount for achievement of target goals); Retirement Contributions and/or Deferred Compensation: $75,000 (contribution to retirement plan calculated at 15 percent of annual base salary); $50,000 (university’s contribution to deferred compensation plans for a Total compensation: $675,000. Other terms: Dr. Capilouto and his wife are required to live in a university-owned home, Maxwell Place; UK also will provide Dr. Capilouto with an automobile and membership dues. ( President Todd’s current compensation is $657,000.)

Alabamian on the fence for top spot

Selected Sunday, May 1 as the preferred candidate who would replace President Lee T. Todd, Capilouto is currently the Provost of the University of Alabama, where he serves as the chief academic officer for a university with 11 schools and colleges, 17,543 students and some $460 million in annual external research.
A native of Alabama, Capilouto holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Alabama, a Doctorate of Dentistry and Master’s of Public Health from UAB and a Doctorate in Health Policy and Management from the Harvard University School of Public Health. He has also published more than 70 articles, abstracts and book chapters in a long academic career in health and higher education policy.

While at UAB, Capilouto he has helped lead the adoption of the university’s strategic plan, an integrated and more transparent budgeting system and continued increases in research funding for an institution that is one of the nation’s leading public medical and health sciences’ campuses. UAB is currently ranked 31st nationally in federal research funding and 20th in funding from the National Institutes of Health, including is among 51 public and private universities, as well as the only Alabama university classified by the Carnegie Foundation for both “very high research activity” and “community engagement.” In addition, UAB has the only medical center in Alabama listed in the U.S. News & World Report “Best Hospitals” issue for 21 straight years.
The Board of Trustees will meet on Tuesday, May 3, to consider whether to extend a formal offer to Capilouto to become UK’s 12th president on July 1.
