Artist is in the spotlight

Carolina artist Edwin (Eddie) H. Weaver, Jr., who has been an artist and a glassblower for 42 years, is June’s artist of the month at Carolina Foothills Artisan Center in Landrum, South Carolina. An opening reception will be Friday, June 5, from 5:30-7:30 pm, which is free and open to the public.

Weaver attributes his artistic inclination to a strong desire to work with his hands. He feels inspired by and follows in the footsteps of his maternal grandfather, who was an accomplished painter. “Color fascinates me and the melding of these bold colors creates a one-of-a-kind,” he said. “It is magic and it is all in my hands.”

As a wholly self-taught artist, his love of brilliant colors, along with special techniques and materials, is employed in each of his unique paintings. Weaver’s interpretive, folk art and folk-pop paintings are each created with self-compounded paint, using pigments, minerals, metallic oxides and acrylic bases.

Weaver has perfected his skill from a kitchen table-beginning and now enjoys the distinction of his art being held in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institute, the Corning Museum of Glass and the Marble Collectors Society of America. As well as many of his art works are held in private collections in the United States and abroad. He was also published in 2000 with peer artists in the volume entitled: “Collectible Contemporary Marbles: A Symphony of Color.”
