Artist’s emotions expressed in works

Because we can talk about this global problem, 2018, collagraph and stitching on paper, 20 x 16 inches, Susan Heggestad.

RAPID CITY, SD (PNAN) – Opening at the Dahl Arts Center on Friday, November 18, 2022, “Because” will be an exhibition by Susan Heggestad with an artist’s reception between 5:00-7:00 pm.

On view will be a series of mixed media, layered collagraphs that have been cut apart and recombined with stitching as well as some works that have been incorporated in vintage linens. Completed between 2013 and 2018, these works marks the synthesis of various themes concerning the body, gendered experiences and violence.

The works themselves are not explicitly violent, but use texture, color, scale and juxtaposition to sometimes create a sense of unease. With titles from Rebecca Solnit’s essay, “Men Explained Things to Me”; they can initiate conversations that some viewers find cathartic and relevant.
