Artworks to reveal ‘secrets’

The Artistry presents “World Warriors” in the Atrium Gallery at the Bloomington Center for the Arts in Bloomington, Minnesota. Featuring the works by Minneapolis artist Kristi Abbott, this exhibit expands Abbott’s 2018 artistic series “Woman Warriors” with the introduction of several male warriors. The show is on view through December 22, 2019.

“World Warrior Men-Asia” paper collage, Kristi Abbott

These original collages incorporate paper, glitter, transfer images, paint, pencil, printmaking and more to create intricate and layered portraits.  The characters that Abbott chooses to create reflect strength and energy from personas around the world and across time.

Imagined through costuming, photographs, paintings, world maps, and other elements, the portraits carry certain cultural markers distinctive to their geography and heritage, but their power and beauty speak universally to the essence of the female and male warrior.

Abbott’s portraits are often embedded with hidden images, “small secrets” relating back to some part of the personality or biography of the individual, unlocking their story one detail at a time.
