FARGO, ND (PNAN) – Born in Ohio in 1934 and growing up on a farm in Centerville, Hazel Belvo started her artistic explorations with the painting of individual cellular structures. Over time her imagery would develop to include expansive landscapes, powerful trees and portraits that expressed love, determination and strength. On view in the William and Anna Jane Schlossman Gallery at the Plains Art Museum through May 27, 2023,
Over her almost 70 year-long career, the exhibit features past and present artworks and a selection of Hazel’s travel journals. Belvo’s art engages spirituality, myth and the feminine, with the study of nature as a prominent theme.
As a prominent contributor to both the arts and feminist advocacy in the Upper Midwest region, Hazel co-founded the Women’s Art Registry of Minnesota, was the Dean of the Fine Arts Department at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and taught at the Grand Marais Artist Colony. Her artwork is in private and public collections, including the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Walker Art Center, Weisman Art Museum, Tweed Museum of Art, Bezalel Museum, Dewitt Wallace Collection and General Mills.
