Won Ju Lim: Raycraft Is Dead

 

BRIEF ABOUT: Can we ever really own a space, either legally, practically or theoretically? Mixed media installations by Won Ju Lim ask her viewers to consider the psychological relationship they have to their own spaces. By investigating, exploiting and deconstructing the spaces of her home in this exhibit, “Raycraft Is Dead”, the artist invites us to rethink our everyday experiences of our own spaces.

     Her work does indeed examine the ‘dialogue’ between real and imaginary space as they relate to fantasy, memory and longing. The formal and conceptual practice of her multimedia work draws from sources including Baroque architecture, fantasy and science fiction films, the urban landscape and the domestic space.

     An ongoing body of work set in YBCA’s Terrace Landing, the show is composed of sculptures, video projections and collages that were born of Lim’s looking at domestic spaces as witnesses to the history of a certain place. On view through December 6, 2015.

Won Ju Lim was born in Gwangju, South Korea, and currently lives and works in Los Angeles. She has a BS from Woodbury University in Burbank, California and an MFA from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California.

     Artist Lim is the recipient of numerous grants including the Creative Capacity Fund (2014), Henry L. and Natalie E. Freund Fellowship (2013), Tribeca Film Institute Media Arts Fellowship (funded by the Rockefeller Foundation) (2007), Korea Arts Foundation for Visual Arts Grant (2005), and California Community Foundation Emerging Artist Fellowship (2004).
