Spring is in the air and so will be the music of the Dayton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra as they present their final Spring Concert on Sunday, May 5, 2013 at 3:00 pm at the Schuster Center.
“This concert marks the celebration of our 75th anniversary,” said Dr. Patrick Reynolds, Conductor of the DPYO and Assistant Conductor of the DPO. “We’re proud of our position as the third oldest youth orchestra program in the country and proud to be part of a Dayton Philharmonic tradition of excellence in education.”
Reynolds chose musical selections to honor the leaders, teachers and past and current musicians of the DPYO. The opening selection is the Overture from Candide by the great American composer, conductor, musician and teacher Leonard Bernstein. Next is active American composer Steven Bryant’s deeply reflective work “Dusk,” followed by Antonin Dvorak’s much-played, much-loved masterpiece Symphony No. 9 “From the New World.”
“These dedicated students rehearse 3 hours every Sunday during the school year in addition to taking private lessons, rehearsing on their own and participating in their school band and orchestra programs,” said Dayton Performing Arts Alliance Education Director Gloria Pugh. “We welcome former DPYO members as well as the private and public school teachers to help us celebrate this landmark 75th season.”
