“Takuwe, An Educational Art Exhibit About the Wounded Knee Massacre” exhibition opens Friday, February 15, 2019 in the Ruth Brennan Gallery at the Dahl Arts Center in Rapid City, South Dakota. An Artists’ Reception will be Friday, March 29 from 5:00-7:00 pm with a Guest Curator Talk at 6:00 pm. The show remains on view through Saturday, May 18, 2019.

Forty-six Lakota artists created visual artworks, poems and songs for this project, all of which relate to the 1890 massacre that took place in Wounded Knee, South Dakota. The show includes twenty-eight visual art pieces along with seven poems and seven songs.

     “Takuwe” is a Lakota word which translates into English as “why.” The focus of this exhibition is the 1890 massacre of Lakotas at Wounded Knee, but it also includes historical context leading to the massacre as well as additional contemporary information related to land issues and opportunities that exist at Wounded Knee today.
