Famed duo opens SuperPops season

(NWPR) – The Grammy-award winning couple of Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. opens the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra’s 2010-2011 Kettering Health Network SuperPops Series on Friday, October 8 and Saturday 9, both nights at 8:00 pm in the Schuster Center.  They will join with the DPO to perform all their chart-topping songs.

To open the program, Music Director Neal Gittleman and the DPO will join with three vocalists from the USAF Band of Flight: MSgt Shawn Stanley, TSgt Felita Rowe and SSgt Terra Mason, performing a variety of music inspired by flight, including “Up, Up & Away.”

As lead vocalists of the smash 60s group The 5th Dimension, Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. not only recorded “Up, Up & Away” but also “Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In”, “Wedding Bell Blues”, “One Less Bell to Answer”, and “Stoned Soul Picnic.” After a decade with The 5th Dimension, they established themselves as a duo and had an immediate success with the single, “You Don’t Have To Be A Star (To Be In My Show).”  The song was a no.1 hit and earned them a Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance By a Duo or Group.  They went on to further success in recording and on television, including Marilyn’s five years as host of the popular 1980s music program, “Solid Gold.”
