(NWPR-IN) – Since 2007, Winnipeg/Montreal-based vocal quintet, Chic Gamine has been entertaining its audiences with their voices as instruments, effortlessly launching into intricate string arrangements, bass-heavy rhythm sections and lush harmonies, with only a solo percussionist as their main sound support. On Saturday, February 12 at 7:30 pm in the Hall-Moser Theatre at Arts Place in Portland, this group will deliver the sounds goers will want a series of overtimes.
Gospel, Soul, R’n’B, 50’s Doo-Wop, Brazilian forro and French Chanson are infused into the voices and rhythms of these songmakers: singers Ariane Jean, Andrina Turenne, Alexa Dirks, Annick Brémault and drummer Sacha Daoud, who create audios that echoes with passion and soul as well as their noted brand of humor.
“This group can sing, and it can write. Their voices are rich, deep, smoky and sultry, and they sound like they’re having a blast. This isn’t music to work to, though: it’s for sitting on the porch or dancing with your kid, which is a lot more fun anyway,” expressed reviewer Karen Stiller.
Chic Gamine’s self-titled debut received critical acclaim with nominations for the Canadian Folk Music Award and a Western Canadian Music Award and also garnered the 2009 Juno Award for Best Roots/Traditional Album of the Year.
