Huether installation completed

“The Falls” is a 2020 Installation by Gordon Huether in the new Salt Lake City, Utah International Airport, Organic Glass Rods, Pyrex Rods, Dichroic Glass Fins, 65’H x 12’W x 2’6”D. The stainless steel cables carry the roughly 300 dichroic glass panels and 220 glass rods, hand-blown by Alexander Sarkis Abajian of Glow Glass Studio in Oakland, California.

SALT LAKE CITY, UT (AAPDN) – Inspired by the waterfalls dispersed among Utah’s canyon landscape, “The Falls” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1eoD4bQoT5w&feature=youtu.be)   sculpture cascades down the escalator well at the entrance to the new main terminal and makes use of the natural light this location receives from the terminal’s glass facade, casting an array of ever-changing colors and patterns on adjacent surfaces.

The installation took a skilled crew of men several weeks using a custom designed movable platform, to attach the glass panels and rods to the cables with specially-designed glass clamps.

The entire suspended sculpture weighs 5,000 pounds and is attached to the terminal ceiling with spring boots to help retain tension on the cables during the winter months when the roof can bend under the weight of up to four feet of snow.
