(AAPNW-KY) – From Tuesday, October 12 through November 12, the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft in Louisville will showcase, “Dia de los Muertos” (Day of the Dead) with the UofL Latin American and Latino Studies Program by honoring the victims of the Haitian and the Chilean earthquakes. There will be a series of altars where goers are invited to bring items to honor their family, friends and deceased loved ones, including other events.
On Saturday, October 30 from Noon-4:00 pm, the Education Department will host a hands-on workshop, “Altered Books” for adults. Participants will draw inspiration from the altars and shrines constructed during the festivities. They will learn a multitude of techniques for changing a book, from cutting niches to adding doors, windows and pockets. Paints, dyes, pencils, knives, stamps and memorabilia will be used to create an altar from a simple book. Instructed by local artist Elizabeth Riggle, the workshop fee is $43 for Museum members and $48 for non-members. To register, call 502.589.0102 or email julieyoder@kentuckyarts.org. For Friday, November 5 from 5:00-10:00 pm and in conjunction with the First Friday Trolley Hop, the Museum is hosting a party. Food, live music, sugar skull and tissue flower workshops, Flamenco and fire dancers, face painting, a skeleton costume contest, art cars and a candlelit march are some of the activities, including Mexican folk art from the collection of Phillip S. Cooke will be on view. The celebration is free and open to the public, and guests are encouraged to wear costumes and masks.
