Music, art and spoken word form a unity

Cowboys & Gina, Toni, Shonda, Luisa, Remica

(PNAN-VA) –  “PFAC is the perfect venue to combine great art, fresh music, interesting people, and strong poetic voices, “ said Toni Wynn, who is an author, art educator and poet as well as being “Art After 5” organizer of the literary program. Also on tap between 5:30-7:30 pm on Thursday, November 18, will be Gina Dalmas and the Cow Tippin’ Playboys, visual artist Brian Murphy, including poets Shonda Buchanan, Remica L. Bingham, Luisa Igloria, and Wynn who says, “All four of us are really looking forward to sharing the mic and bringing our energy…”

“A modest woman who plays guitar, sings, and shows great regard for the decencies of behavior, speech, and dress” is how Dalmas describes herself. She was recently named the Winner of Best Americana Music in the 2009 Portfolio Music Awards. The Cow Tippin Playboys are: Greg Wikle, mandolin; Christopher May, bass guitar; and Gabe Baesen, drums, a Honky Tonk/Country/Indie Rock band from Norfolk that plays classic country standards by legends, such as Patsy Cline and Ernest Tubb, as well as original songs.

In their work, all poets explore stories of their past. Sundance Institute fellow Buchanan recollects her hometown Kalamazoo, Michigan, while Bingham recalls Biblical tales and family memories; Igloria’s poems describe Filipinos’ experiences with colonialism; and Wynn’s work pays tribute to the Earth.
