(NWPR-OH) – A collection of Amish Country Photographs by Ken Lausa and pottery from the Black Swamp Studios by Eliseo Escobedo goes on view for the artists’ families and friends on Sunday, July 15, 2012 from 2:00-4:00 pm in the St. Rita’s Mezzanine Gallery in Lima, Ohio.
Lausa was born and raised on a farm in Landeck, Ohio, which may account for the rapport he developed with the Amish farmers in and around Mt. Victory, Ohio. The eldest of four children and educated at St. Rose grammar and high schools in Lima, he sought work at Westinghouse at the height of the Depression. He remained at Westinghouse for the remainder of his life. He was an early and enthusiastic participant in the Lima Art Association (now ArtSpace/Lima). His photographs were often on display in the galleries and at the Autumn Show, the predecessor to Once Upon a Sunday. The photographs in this exhibit date from the 1970’s.
Escobedo owns, operates and teaches ceramics at the Black Swamp Studios in Findlay, which he opened earlier this year. He has studied with Laurie Pierce of Clearwater, Florida, and with John Moore of Largo, Florida. His introduction to ceramics was as an assistant to Ed Corle at the University of Findlay. Of his work, he writes: “My interpretation of form is constantly changing, and perfecting a shape never tires me. Just when I think I’ve got it, a new form appears to challenge me yet again. To me, clay is like nature — changing on a daily, a monthly, and a yearly basis.”
