TITLE: Black History Month

BRIEF ABOUT: Free to New Mexico residents with ID, Museum of New Mexico Foundation members, and youth under 17 years old, programming will begin when Akeem Ayanniyi and Agalu take the stage at 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm with a rousing West African drumming and dance performance. 

      At 2:00 pm, the New Mexico Centennial Children’s Author Vaunda Nelson, will talk about her award-winning book. She received her inspiration to write Almost to Freedom from the black dolls in the museum’s Girard Wing.

     The book tells the story of a young girl’s dramatic escape from slavery via the Underground Railroad, from the perspective of her beloved rag doll, she brings these dolls to life, telling their story as well as others who were escaping slavery, giving us a powerful view into the collective history of the United States.
