(PNAN-NY) – There is an Australian Aboriginal Proverb that says, “We are all visitors to this time, this place. We are just passing through. Our purpose here is to observe, to learn, to grow, to love… and then we return home.” On Tuesday, November 16, 2010, director and co-founder of the Granger Collection, Erika Glover did so, at the age of 79 at her home in the two-island nation of St. Kitts and Nevis, West Indies.
In 1964, Glover and her husband William, who passed in January 2010, established the Granger Collection, which grew out of several file cabinets to become a historical picture library in Manhattan, now contains more than six million black and white prints, photographs and color transparencies illustrating the history of mankind, spanning more than 25,000 years of world history, from prehistoric times through the mid-20th century.
As many editors and researchers know of Mrs. Glover’s unrelenting dedication to the collection, which was named after Reverend James Granger (1723-1776), who wrote an 18th-Century history of England, however the ‘Glover Collection’ specializes in the history of people, places, things and events represented in a variety of mediums, and primarily serves textbook publishers, documentarians and other specialized publishing concerns.
There is another saying, this one by Joel Barker, who can be easily attributed to Erika Glover when it comes to physical pro-activeness: “Vision without action is a dream. Action without vision is simply passing the time. Action with Vision is making a positive difference.” Her legacy beyond the collection are: Daughters, Johanna Wasylik of Alberta, Canada and Lorna Abungu of Nairobi, Kenya; sons-in-law, Rick Wasylik and George Abungu; and four grandchildren, Charlotte, Nicholas and Alexander Wasylik, and Ajuma Abungu. She is also survived by a brother, Luka and his wife, Vera and son Boris, in Croatia. Also, Lila Dlaboha becomes the new Managing Director, while Johanna Wasylik as President and Lorna Abungu, Treasurer of the Granger Collection – www.granger.com.
