RAPID CITY, SD (PNAN) – Going on view Friday, April 8, 2022 at the Dahl Arts Center, “Shadow Catcher” is an exhibition of wet plate photographs by image-maker Shane Balkowitsch, which will include 60 original prints.
Beginning in 2012, Balkowitsch, a self-taught large format photographer, goal was to photograph 1000 Native American portraits with the wet plate collodion process, which was invented in 1851. The process involves adding a soluble iodide to a solution of cellulose nitrate and coating a glass plate with the mixture.
Internationally recognized, Shane’s work in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Museum, the Library of Congress in Washington, DC and the Royal Photographic Society in London.
The exhibit runs through August 6, 2022. In addition, original glass plates, prints and his book, Northern Plains Native Americans: A Wet Plate Perspective will be available for purchase that also benefits the American Indian College Fund (https://collegefund.org). Editor’s Note: On Saturday, April 9, 2022, Balkowitsch will conduct a demonstration on wet plate collodion photography from 1:00-4:00 pm at the center.
