MEMPHIS, TN (AAPNW) – Since 1991, the National Civil Rights Museum (https://www.civilrightsmuseum.org) has presented The Freedom Award, which honors those who have dedicated their lives to the advancement of civil and human rights. The Freedom Award honorees represent some of the most outspoken and impactful activists in the ongoing pursuit of civil and human rights both domestically and internationally. The 2022 honorees are Taylor Branch, Isabel Wilkerson and Frederick W. Smith.
As of 2019, 97 Freedom Award honors were bestowed upon 97, including Nelson Mandela, The Dalai Lama, Oprah Winfrey, Stevie Wonder, President Bill Clinton, President Jimmy Carter, Rosa Parks, Rev. Jesse Jackson, Rev. Bernice A. King, Coretta Scott King, Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Colin Powell, Dorothy Height, Diane Nash, Cicely Tyson, Danny Glover, Dr. Bill Frist, Bishop Desmond Tutu, Bono, Sidney Poitier, Harry Belafonte, Mikhail Gorbachev, Myrlie Evers-Williams, Joan Trumpauer Mulholland, Ruby Bridges-Hall, Ava DuVernay, Soledad O’Brien, Benjamin Crump, Bryan Stevenson, President Joe Biden, Jesse Jackson, Gloria Steinem, Hafsat Abiola and John Legend.
