A plein air artist is often gifted with the ability to see beyond the immediate display of color and light. A sunset, a tree or a person’s facial expression can seem more alive and detailed to them. They understand this perception and are able to deliver this beauty to others through art.
  Â
Jill Stefani Wagner is an example of how a plein air artist is able to transform color, shadow and light into a fascinating picture for the layman. What is missed in the twinkle of a new day’s light on a blade of grass or the reflective ripples in a pond are suddenly seen through a plein air painting. Jill has a passion in capturing light and layering pigment on paper to bring nature to life.
Wagner works in three mediums: watercolor, pastel and oil. Her work has been displayed throughout the United States and in various private and corporate collections. Jill has been featured in noted publications such as, Plein Air Magazine, Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine and Pastel Journal which showed her themed work on travel and the bestselling French magazine, Practique des Arts, displayed a collection of skyscapes.
Always eager to experiment in new and exciting forms to bring out the rich features of her subject, Jill also fell in love with Gouache, also known as opaque watercolor. Since layering is a major part of her professional trademark, the architecture and waterscapes deliver a reflective presence. Oils are also fairly new to Wagner’s list of intriguing work of plein air paintings. Her ability to capture the realism of any landscape or waterscape is fascinating, but the personal emphasis with lighting and color make her signature paintings unique.
Artist Wagner received her education with a BFA degree at the University of Michigan School of Art and was the owner and creative director of an award-winning advertising and graphic design firm in Ann Arbor, Michigan before taking up plein art full time. Truly a Wolverine, she was born in Port Huron, reared in Rochester and today, Jill resides in Saline, Michigan where her work continues to attract attention from noted organizations such as the Great Lakes Pastel Society, Oil Painters of America and the American Impressionist Society.
