The Ridge-and-Valley Appalachians in Tennessee offer an impressive view of nature’s ability to create beauty from a continental collision. From an aerial view, the soft ridges of the mountains sweep down to perfectly aligned valleys that stretch over six Eastern states. What better place for an artist to feel the welcoming platform for creativity?
Betty Bullen considers this area her home. Although she joined the ranks of the fast-paced financial industry, the comforting appeal of Union County, Tennessee, remained in the memories of her mind. In 2004, Bullen returned to the homestead where her 5th Great Grandfather had received a land grant for his services in the Revolutionary War.
Today, Bullen is able to follow her heart in oil painting without the distractions of the world. She has studied under the direction of Robert Johnson, David Laffell, Tom Browning, Johnnie Liliedahl, Roger Dale Brown and Seth Haverkamp over the past 20 years, and the education has proven invaluable. Her floras, landscapes and portraits come alive with soft rich detail. A master of emotion, Betty arouses feelings in all of her work.
The landscape scenes are particularly unique with a mystical flow of shadows, shades and color. The balance rendered in this country setting provides a dreamy and solaced tone of going home.
Artist Bullen has been recognized and has received awards through the Tennessee Artists Association, Lenoir City Art in the Park, Virginia Beach Art Fair, Virginia Highlands Art Show, and TVA and I Fair Fine Art Show. She has juried several competitions, including Oil Painters of America 2012 and Dolly Wood Theme Park from 2004 to 2011.
