(NWPR-IN) – Opening Thursday, May 5 in the Hugh N. Ronald Gallery at Arts Place, Portland Center, “Embracing the Stitch: Fabric Chronicles” features works by Cathy Jeffers. “I have been designing my art quilts since 2005. What came before was coloring and cutting paper, doll clothes and mud pies. A little later weaving, batik, stitchery and mixed media came and by the 1980’s, I was creating metal sculptures, working in clay, and had convinced myself of a life in 3-D work. I love the tactile aspects of my art work,” said the Centerville, Ohio quilt artist.
The theme of this exhibition has much to do with being a woman. In her art quilts, she uses fabrics that create a mood and tell the stories which make sense of situations. “More often than not, I take a whimsical approach because quilting should be fun,” said Cathy.
Votes of approval on Jeffers’ artistry have come from many, including Dayton resident and artist Amy Kollar-Anderson, who said: “I love the quilts Cathy makes because they vibrate with her energy. They combine quirky images with outrageous colors and patterns. She is able to take pieces of seemingly unrelated fabrics and combine them in quilts that not only “make sense” but captivate the eye…”
Over the years, Jeffers has received several awards and was later published in books and magazines, including art books by Nita Leland. She graduated from Miami University with a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Arts in Art Education and a second Master of Arts in Gifted Education from Wright State University.
An artist’s reception will be held on Friday, May 13 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. The show will remain on view through June 30.
