(PNAN-VA) – Opening to the public at the Peninsula Fine Arts Center  in Newport News on Sunday, January 22, 2012, the 51st Annual Art and the Animal Exhibition of the Society of Animal Artists features 65 pieces by members of the ‘Society’ as well as selected historical works by John James Audubon, Mark Catesby and Alexander Wilson.

“Trailer Hound” 2011 by Dana Lee Thompson, ©SAA.

‘Art and the Animal’ displays all manner of species in a variety of media, from watercolors of honeybees to acrylic paintings of elephants and from bronze blue marlins to limestone bears. The artists are from the United States of America, England, Australia, Canada, France and Sweden.

“While the emphasis is clearly on realistic depictions of animals,” says Pfac curator Michael Preble, “the infusion of many different themes–strength, beauty, courage and survival among them–gives this exhibition an exceptionally compelling added dimension.”

On Saturday January 21, the exhibition opens to Pfac members and dignitaries as the introduction to the beginning of a year-long series of events for the Center’s 50th Anniversary Celebration.
