CHICO, CALIF (PNAN) – Closing Sunday, December 4, 2022, “Footsteps to You” is an exhibition of the journey from pre-slavery to Civil Rights to today, telling the story of humanity, perseverance and courage at the Museum of Northern California Art.
Presented by the Black Voice Foundation, in collaboration with Butte County Office of Education, the museum also hosts an art show, “Black Voices in Art” of works created by Northern California Black artists, who uses images, lines, strokes, words, and color that tells stories and weaves tales of the past, present and future.
These artists, Cynthia Brannvall, Berkeley, Cheryl Derricotte, San Francisco, Joshua Edwards, Chico, Arabella Grayson, Elverta, Mark Harris, San Francisco, Thomas Ellis Jackson, American Canyon, Melanie King, Chico, Dale Martin, Chico, Will Maxen, Davis, George McCalman, San Francisco, Ramekon O’Arwisters, San Francisco and Martin Townsend of Chico works may take on a different prominences recalling a history, both the past and the present, but when viewers respect these voices, who are working toward a better understanding of our shared experiences, the desired outcome forms historical empathy.
The exposition, Footsteps is a collection of artifacts gifted to the Foundation in 2016 from Jerry Gore, a well-known historian, who for 20 years served as a docent on Footsteps to Freedom Underground Railroad Study Tours. Since then, the foundation and Hardy Brown have added not only more artifacts, but also the stories behind them.
“The Gore Collection has a focus on building historical empathy by immersing you in a world where people were considered objects; a prejudice that was entirely based on the color of one’s skin.”
Hardy Brown leads conversations on empathy and history with hundreds of teachers and thousands of students where learners gain knowledge and power of Freedom Movements. “When students and other visitors see these artifacts, it’s not just show-and-tell. It’s a conversation.”
