(NWPR-OH) – On Saturday, October 30 at 3:00 pm in the Benjamin and Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center, the area’s largest musical Halloween celebration, “PhilharMonster” returns as the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra and Music Director Neal Gittleman open the 2010-2011 DP&L Family Series with an array of spooky musical treats.
Maestro Gittleman, who has a tradition of being attired in elaborate dress for the occasion, will lead a costumed DPO through a program that includes Daniel James Chan’s Overture for a Comic Book Hero, the Halloween favorite Danse macabre by Camille Saint-Saëns, and George Kleinsinger’s children’s classic Tubby the Tuba, featuring soloist Timothy Northcut, Principal Tuba of the DPO, and narrator Paul Helfrich. The program concludes with music from popular electronic games in the “Video Games Live” suite.
Goers are encouraged to come in costume for the DPO’s annual contest at 2:20 pm in the Wintergarden. Contestants can win DPO concert tickets in three divisions: Age 3-5, Age 6-9, and Age 10 and up. Besides the Principal Tuba with the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, Timothy J. Northcut is presently Associate Professor of Music, Instructor of Tuba and Euphonium at the University of Cincinnati College, Conservatory of Music. He also serves as Music Director of the CCM Brass Choir and coordinator of the brass chamber music program. In 1997, 2003 and 2010, Tim was awarded CCM’s Ernest N. Glover Outstanding Teacher Award. Also in 2003, he was awarded the University of Cincinnati Mrs. A. B. (Dolly) Cohen Award for Excellence in University Teaching and was recognized as one of Ohio’s Top 100 Educators in Ohio Magazine’s Excellence in Education Awards. From 1998-2001, he served as the Executive Director of the Rafael Mendez Brass Institute, an international performance and career development seminar for brass musicians in conjunction with Summit Brass, America’s premier large brass ensemble. In 2008, Tim served as artistic director and host of the 2008 International Tuba Euphonium Conference.
