The leap from the Moon

At 1:53 pm on Monday, July 21, 1969, the astronauts Neil A. Armstrong and Edwin E. “Buzz†Aldrin Jr. lifted off from the Moon in the module’s ascent stage and then met up with Michael Collins and the orbiting Apollo 11 spacecraft. The three explorers fired away from lunar orbit on July 22 and returned to Earth on July 24.

THE LARGE, dark-colored area in the background is Smyth’s Sea, centered at 85 degrees east longitude and 2 degrees south latitude on the lunar surface (nearside). This view looks west. The Earth rises above the lunar horizon. Photo courtesy of NASA. Smithsonian Institution is description source. Apollo 11 launched from Cape Kennedy on July 16, 1969.

Armstrong and Aldrin stayed on Moon for just more 21 hours-two-and-a-half hours, conducting scientific experiments and exploring outside the Lunar Module. These three astronauts/explorers fired away from lunar orbit on July 22 and returned to Earth on July 24.

Also on this day, my window to the world changed. I was working at the Delphos Daily Herald as well as juggling college.
