(NWPR-OH) – Those were the days and the legacy continues on Saturday, October 16 at 7:30 pm in the Central Auditorium in Findlay, Ohio. The Artie Shaw Orchestra will swing the goers with the Big Band era music of jazz. Shaw’s clarinet playing in his technical facility of fast and lively numbers, often compared to Benny Goodman, will fill the airways with those timeless hits of the 1930s, 40s and 50s, now carried on by bandleader Matt Koza.
A native New Yorker, Koza was born in Manhattan and raised in Brooklyn where his father, an avid jazz and classical music fan, shaped his early interest in music. He began playing tenor saxophone with the Artie Shaw Orchestra when directed by Dick Johnson. During his tenure as the featured saxophone soloist, the Orchestra toured worldwide, accompanying entertainers, like Tony Bennett, Jack Jones and Buddy DeFranco, and was featured at the Newport Jazz Festival, including when the Orchestra performed at the dedication celebration of the National World War II Memorial in Washington, DC.
Shaw and his band recorded a number of hits such as “Stardust”, “Begin the Begine”, “Moonglow”, and “Carioca.” A legend in the world of jazz, Shaw is regarded by many as the finest and most innovative of all jazz clarinetists and one of the most adventurous and accomplished figures in American music.
