     The Peninsula Fine Arts Center in Newport News, Virginia recognized 13 high school students for artworks exhibited in “Prefaces 2014” at an awards reception recently. The annual show honors exceptional artwork by area 10th, 11th and 12th graders. The exhibition is on display until May 25.

     Artworks from students attending 16 Peninsula high schools we included in the exhibition. Artist and PFAC instructor Lee Gerry Wertheimer served as juror for the show, selecting 131 artworks from 490 entries. Awards for Best in Show and first through fourth places are given by the Tidewater Chapter of The Society, Inc.

     The winners were: Best in Show, $300: Katherine Evans, Menchville High School, “Pots & Pans,” charcoal; First Place, $250: Siobhan Irvin, Warhill High School, “$7.50 Hamburger and Fries,” oil; Second Place, $200: Tia Nichols, Woodside High School, “Embrace the Edge,” acrylic; Third Place, $150: Rebekah Nettleton, Grafton High School, “Trapped,” clay; Fourth Place, $100: Jordan Allen, Grafton High School, “Time,” clay; and the David J. Levinson Photography Award: Cap League, Jamestown High School, “Tiny Flaws,” photograph.
