Masterworks of American Impressionism

“Portrait of a Lady in White” c. 1916, by William Worcester Churchill, (American, 1858-1926), oil on canvas, 45 x 36 inches, private collection.

BRIEF ABOUT: An intimate look at early 20th century American art colonies, features 55 pieces by well-known American Impressionists, including Mary Cassatt, John Singer Sargent and Childe Hassam. The collection includes landscapes showcasing America of the era, from its harbors to its corn fields. It also features portraits, from John Singer Sargent’s “Man Reading” to William Paxton’s “Girl with a Hand Mirror.”

The works represent the golden age of the movement, from the 1880s to the 1940s, demonstrating an interest in capturing the effects of light in loosely brushed compositions. The exhibit reflects the critical role of artists’ colonies in the development of the Impressionism movement in America, with artists gathering to teach and collaborate in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New Mexico and California.
